Stumbled upon an interesting transceiver chip from Semtech called LoRa SX1276. It is supposed to have very long range and low current consumption. Very expensive if compared to the NRF24L01 but maybe it could be useful for someone to know it exists.

this is a HopeRf chipset, there is a post on supporting RFM12b already
