Thermocouple Type K temperature measurement

Hi, I am trying to measure temperature using thermocouple type k using the ice bath method. I joined one end of the type k together and the other two end with copper wires each. I placed the joined end into boiling water and the two open ends with copper wires into an ice water. However, my voltage reading on my multimeter is way off.
Anybody can help me in this? really need it for my project.
