MySensors connected over power, is this possible?
-
I haven't posted anything on this forum for a while. I just watched what happened on this forum. Meanwhile I've extended my own Sensors network with a large amount of sensors and actuators. And I can truly say, that mySensors is one the best discoveries I did in the last few years. I hope that nobody feels offended by the questions I'm writing down in this post. This morning I had an epiphany, which I like to share with you all.
While most of my internet devices are connected to my router through WiFi, some of them are connected through a special device that enables internet over my power lines. Like in the following image.
I have this setup for almost 10 years now and it works flawlessly. It actually works so good, that I completely forgot that I have them. Which in my case is a good thing. Since the amount of communication through air is becoming higher and higher. I thought that this would be a good extension to mySensors. With this I mean, that I'd would love to be able to hook up a sensor to a power adapter, which is able to send the sensors data to a my sensors gateway over the power.
Now in theory I think this is possible, but I haven't got a clue how I would develop something like this. My specialty is more in the field of software development and having crazy ideas like this. Is there anyone who has experience with sending and receiving data over power? And is this just a crazy idea, or could it work?
Some use cases. Just unscrew you're coffee machine. Add the device that can communicate over power, add a small arduino for controlling the power on/off switch of your coffee machine. Mount the screw back, plug in the coffee machine in a power outlet and you're done.
Benefits. Instead of creating a new wireless infrastructure, you can use an infrastructure that's already there in every house. No more disturbance in your communication by radio transmitters of your neighbors. And things like that.
I'd love to hear your thoughts about this idea. And maybe we can develop something like this together. Or maybe this technology is already available. In that case I'd be happy of someone could post a link or something. I'm really excited about this idea.
Update 1: After investigating this idea a bit on google. It looks that there's a UPB standard for communication over power. But finding hardware seems to be more challenging.
Update 2: It seems like UPB is only available for 110V, which is not what we have in the Netherlands.

Unfortunately seems to be retired.

Thanx. I'll use it for my investigation. This one looks promissing. http://hackaday.com/2014/04/05/open-source-power-line-communication/ Maybe a Powerline repeater as a first project.
The thesis of the designer can be found here http://www.candrian.gr/index.php/power-line-communication/ But I don't think I understand half of it
