I tried looking in Github but couldn't find any new about this. Has this been fixed?

@melwinek signing is memory optimized on the development branch. It cost some yes, but that is pretty much just how it is. It takes some ram to store digests and intermediate data for the calculations.

NodeMCU is much bigger. It also costs a lot more. I do not need a USB port or any other features that have these modules.
