    Seems like it would be easy to DIY for fairly cheap. The main component is just a mirror mount, such as:

    I suppose it would be even cheaper if you could buy it without the mirror.

    The back and forth arm support is just a drawer slide, such as:

    My only question is: what would be the best type of camera to give a visual assist? Something tiny that's attached to the lifting pen and that moves with it would be best. And, of course, it needs some kind of macro lens so that it can see up close. I guess maybe something like this:

    Any suggestions?

    Maybe simplest of all would be to mount the suction pen in a fixed position and just use an x-y table underneath it:

    It wouldn't be as fast, but it would be damn accurate. In fact, I think I would also use it to hold the part in place while I solder it! Or at least solder tag it to pin it to the proper position. Or, better yet, UV glue it into place. Holy moly, I think this may be the answer for me. Similar to:

    but for mounting even smaller components. Without something like this, I just don't see how one can manually mount 0.4mm pitch components without quite a lot of frustration.
