Software initiated reboot of Mega does not work

I tried to implement the reboot message in the MQTTClientGateway. I am calling hw_reboot() when receiving the internal reboot message. I am not really sure what happens but the Leds on the Mega start blinking like hell and even pressing the reset button does not boot up the gateway.
Am I missing something?
