Found some info (link below) while sniffing around - looks to be relevant ( pages 10-13 ) as it discusses the same MIF antenna design used on the NRF24 boards and the frequency is 2.4 GHz. Interesting read for newbies like me.
My interpretation of the data is that the best gain/sensitivity is in/from the direction that the leg at the end of the squiggle is pointing. Might do some open air testing when the rain stope and I work out how to extract received signal level info :|

Hi does anyone know where I can find info on the radiation pattern for the NRF24L01 modules with the on-PCB antenna?

A little curious, and like to know the best relative alignment of modules for best performance

@oldsurferdude Just a bit of an update. Decided to try things out with existing hardware first (I am an unapologetic cheap ass) and managed to get Home Assistant running on an old PC (first exposure to Ubuntu and GRUB) and gateway and nodes using some old UNOs. Cursed a lot and learned a bit. Everything seems to work as expected - planning to change the HA host to something smaller and quieter and build some smaller nodes next. Thanks again for your help.

@OldSurferDude Thanks for the additional perspective - I haven't done much coding, so no prefs there, but have assumed the MySensors will better support a battery powered sensors ecosystem

Thanks for your comprehensive response OldSurferDude. Judging from the lack of mentions, it looks like the Sensebender gateway never really took off. I will follow your suggestion with RF-Nano, but will need to make sure that the HA Green will support a serial interface (nothing taken for granted now) - will probably go down the RP path if not. Will let you know how I go - I may be away for some time :)

Hi folks - I am new to this space so please don't crucify me if this a dumb question: A few years ago, I purchased a heap of NRF24L01+ boards and a few Sensebender gateway boards planning to hook these up to Widows hosted Domoticz controller. Ran out of time to play then - and are now looking at a Home Assistant Green instead of Domoticz as I am now keen on a fanless host. My question is what would be the best Green/Sensebender interface to use (assuming it is possible/practical?).
