I'm currently running OpenHab on RPi2. I was looking at some other controller option just out of curiosity. Some of them support Serial and/or Ethernet gateway.

I'm wondering for ex. I want to try out Domoticz. It supports Serial and Ethernet. So, which one should I choose? Does it matter? Serial is better choice over ethernet or vice-versa?

would be great if you can shed some light on this. Thanks!

I guess it mostly depends on what you have available and where you want to place the Gateway. With the serial option you have to have the Gateway quite close to your computer, while with the ethernet option you can have them further apart.

On the other hand, the ethernet option can be more expensive than the serial option since you need an ethernet adapter for the gateway.

For my part I'm quite happy using the serial Gateway together with OpenHAB (earlier) and now testing it with Domoticz without any problems.

... and the serial gateway usually is powered by the host USB computer/controller, while the ethernet gateway requires its own power adapter.

Just adding my two cents ;-)

How could you deal with the need of 'restarting' the arduino (USB) after server reboots?
I use Domoticz on OrangePI and when it reboots, the arduino is powered all the time, so it doesn't see serial arduino port after reboot.

          :-)

I use my Serial gateway plugged on my Vera-Lite USB port, no issues when rebooting. Serial port is always there as it should.

@kolaf Great, Thanks for the response. The serial gateway sound a good option to me. I'm using RPi2 with OpenHab. Would you happen to have any tutorial link where I can look learn the to connect serial gateway to RPi with Openhab? Do I still need MQTT with serial gateway?

PS: I'm new to all this and do not hesitate to ask questions. Hope thats okay. :)

              Thanks

@rvendrame That is definitely a plus point. For me the question is, if serial gateway works with RPi + OpenHab?

There should be a recent topic on this somewhere in the forum. I can look it up when I'm at the computer later.
