Implementing sensor on the gateway?

Is it possible to implement sensors directly on the (serial) gateway itself?
I have my gateway / raspberrypi located besides the electrical utility meter, so instead of making a wireless node to send power usage about 10 cm, it would be easier to implement it on the gateway itself.

No, it is not possible nor recommended. The gateway probably need all processing power it has to handle incoming messages and routing to/from serial interface.
