Uno as serial gateway? Can it also be a sensor node?

Hi all
I was wondering, as I wait for my nanos, pro minis and radio boards to arrive, is it possible to use a(n) Uno as a gateway and stick a sensor on it as well so I can make a start and feel that I am making progress?

@hek Is that because it's meant to ONLY be used in the development branch, or is it a new feature that just hasn't made it to the stable branch yet?

I've got a MQTTClientGateway using an Uno with DHT22 sensor attached. It's working for weeks without problems.
