    • Diving into MySensors and Home Assistant

      Hello,

      I am starting out with MySensors and have lots of questions. After lots of reading I guess MySensors was initially designed for efficient traffic flow on low power radio links connected to a gateway and then to a controller. As far as i can tell, the principle still applies.

      Here's what I have in stock:

      (2) Vera 3 Controllers , one is live and used in the traditional way via ZWave. The other is a spare.
      So far, I tried using a Moteino as the gateway to Vera but the serial/USB problem arises. I'm aware of my options, change to serial or ethernet gateway or have the micasaverde folks fix my serial/usb ports.

      (1) Raspberry Pi 3 with HA 0.42 via Raspian Jessie and the All in One Install

      I guess what I'm having trouble with is the gateways and deciding which way to go. I want to control and automate the usual stuff around the house that I'm currently using Vera for and a for a motorhome.

      I'm aware of MQTT and it's already installed and working on the Pi (yaml) but it's the integration of WiFi/Radio -->Gateway-->MQTT process that's making my head hurt right now.

      For instance, for Vera, to integrate Arduino like nodes am I limited to an ethernet gateway with NRF24L01+ so that only nRF24L01+ nodes can be controlled?

      And for Home Assistant, can a NodeMCU with WiFi act as the gateway to HA and MQTT ? I guess I need a high level explanation of how to glue these things together. I have the Arduino IDE, Putty, WinSCP, Samba all ready to get started with a little help, Thanks

      Thank you, that's what I thought. I saw your handle pop up on all kinds of discussions about this. But, I though i would try to get the Moteino to be recognized. So, I'm going to go with one of the plain vanilla methods (Serial or Ethernet). Just be sure, will the Vera open up the USB by using the correct (MySensors) serial method or is it locked up anyway?

    • Vera and Moteino USB as Gateway

      I've had a Vera 3 for some time but I am new to the Arduino world and was trying to get a Moteino USB to act as my Vera plug-in gateway. The Moteino has no sensors on it. From what i can tell, the Vera refuses to allow my access to the USB port.

      I have the plugin files uploaded to Vera, a device is created (with Luuap startup failure). In advanced, the com failure is (1)
      and Vera insists I choose a serial port. Been through the Vera serial port dance, unplug wait for reload, etc. But, no luck.

      I've stayed up till the wee hours for enough nights trying to get this to work that my wife thinks I have a girlfriend named "Vera" .I would really appreciate some guidance with how to proceed.

      Yes, I did read https://www.mysensors.org/build/raspberry I'm going to put the Adafruit MO's aside for now and go with the Rasberry Pi as the controller. Can you suggest where and what brand RFM69 radio to buy? Adafruit, Sparkfun. I know there are cheaper alternatives though.

      I am new to the micro controller world but a long time IT guy. I know we blame the software guys for everything but...
      So far, I have a Raspberry Pi3 just in with Raspian Jessie.
      2 Adafruit Feather M0 RFM69 Packet Radio (868 or 915 MHz).
      Vera 3 Controller

      Eventually, I would like to have projects on both the Pi and Vera controllers but one step at a time. I bought the Adafruit's thinking about long distance radio and the integration of micro usb/battery backup. But, the RFM69 libraries for the Arm seem to be a big problem. I have a friend with a farm raising hogs, chickens and cattle with multiple outbuildings scattered around where temp, feed level, water level data would be helpful. This is one project.

      Another project is some automation of my motorhome. I have a 42' motorhome that was for its era very complex and top of the line with lots of wiring and distribution boards but before the introduction of any automation. I would like to add the ability to monitor the temp of the storage building remotely, control interior lighting and switches which energize solenoids. Monitoring battery health would be a bonus. I realize the RFM69 radios are overkill with this project.

      So, if someone would please guide me with the appropriate controller and especially the gateway hardware which is confusing me a bit. Lets pick the farm project, I don't know which controller would be appropriate for a newbie (Vera and MySensors plug in) or PI but I would rather use a more integrated gateway with micro usb and radio that is able to be purchased with reasonable ship times. I don't mind buying whatever make sense.
