@gohan Well, in my case, it is going to replace my thermostat, so I already have the 5 wire cable coming up from the basement for that which takes care of the hole in the wall. Since the main controller for the thermostat is in the basement, all I should need at the tablet side is a temp sensor. I will use the 5 wire cable to connect my 5 volt charger and probably a DS18B20 temp sensor to read the temp. In the basement, I will create an arduino node to read the temp and send it to the thermostat controller over my RS485 network. All the other thermostat controls will be handled by the tablet.

@kalle unfortunately I cannot decide for myself, as I live in Vietnam and it's not even available to select in the list of countries where they deliver :(

It was not so hard finding one. I got it from the Pi Hut because now and then they get a shipment and via their newsletter the word is spread. Actually, they seem to have it in stock right now. Just pick the "Just the Pi Zero" option to avoid all their extras :-) Here is the link https://thepihut.com/products/raspberry-pi-zero?variant=14062715972

@Denke Probably cheaper/easier to get a complete unit, rip the electronics out and DIY the inside.

@GertSanders @LastSamurai Have you seen this thread: http://forum.mysensors.org/topic/1816/project-boxes-for-mysensor-s-nodes-and-gateway. Might be better to add to it rather than starting a new one. Cheers Al

I am interested in what people have tried. For example i am creating an outdoor soil moisture + Light sensor + either temperature only or temp/humidity sensor. I am very concerned how to weatherproof while still getting accurate data. I planned to have the soil moisture sticking out of my enclosure but sealed so that all the connections and electronics are inside the enclosure. The enclosure basically sitting on the soil with the prongs from the sensor in the soil. lThe Light sensor I was hoping to have sealed in the enclosure but with a clear plastic window. I am not sure how to keep this from fogging up. The temp/humidity sensor should be measuring outside air, so it would need to have air flow. However I do not think this sensor could handle being in the rain so it would still need to be protected. I am not really sure how to get good air flow but protect this sensor from being splashed by rain. I would love to hear what other people have done. I will post some pictures if i ever get finished.
