MY_SIGNING_SIMPLE_PASSWD

  • Dear all,

yesterday i tried to test the "MY_SIGNING_SIMPLE_PASSWD" feature from the Development Branch.

    But without success.

I configured the Gateway and also one of my Sensors with the same Password, but always i'got "SIGN FAIL" on my sensor and nothing happens on the gateway.

Are there any other Requirements except the Passwrd to test this Feature ?

Is it required, that the Backend (FHEM) supports this feature ?

Or is this Feature currently "work in Progress" and not usable ?

    Thx

    LuFi

@LuFi it is fully implemented and tested on the development branch. Have you examined the log to be sure all messages are successfully transmitted? I am 95% sure you have messages that fail to be sent. The log would show them as NACKs. The log parser on the home page can help you.

  • @Anticimex
    First a small explaniation:
I'am using an Arduino Nano as an Serial Gateway and an Pro Mini 8Mhz 3.3v as Node.
The Nodes using the latest (dev) MysBootloader.

I updated to the latest Git today. (The last copy was around 2 weeks old). And some new Problems occur.

First of all, if the sketch uses more than 40% of Flash size, it will be not possible to enable MY_DEBUG.

For testing i only uncomment te following line from MyConfig.h:
    //#define MY_SIGNING_SIMPLE_PASSWD "MyInsecurePassword"

After this i flashed the Gateway with the sample serial gateway Code and my node with some cleanups and my sources.

    Gateway DEBUG:

The node ends up into an Bootloop.
And some node Messages causes an Gateway Reboot.

Another Point i recognized was that i were no longer able to see the Bootloader requests in my Backend (FHEM) log.

    What i'am doing wrong ?

    Best Regards

    LuFi

@LuFi on beta track signing personalization has been updated to track corruptions. You need to redo personalization in order to get the checksum stored correctly. The log reports that personalization had been tampered.
Tips for reducing memory footprint on development branch is available here.

  • @Anticimex said in MY_SIGNING_SIMPLE_PASSWD:

Is it enough to use an empty gateway sketch with the following line to accomplish this?

    #define RESET_EEPROM_PERSONALIZATION

  • Contest Winner

    @LuFi No, because

    1. That flag is specific to the personalizer sketch
    2. That flag will erase any personalization and replace with 0xFF as documented in the description of the define.
EDIT: by doing this in the personalizer sketch and executing that, it should then pass as using the simple flag does not require personalization data. You probably was using personalization data at some point.

  • ok, i tried that and the "TAMPERED" message is gone.

But it does not work ......

I never received a message from the serial gateway. So i added a short print to the Setup() function and now i see a reboot every time i send a message to the gateway.

Into the Node log i can see some cryptic characters.

Could this be a Memory problem ?

    Flash: 20338 Bytes (66%)
    SRAM: 1664 Bytes (81%)

Or are the 328p Arduino are not really usable for this ?

Are there any Hardware recommendations for Signing / Encryption ?

@LuFi not that I know of. I use atmga328p myself and it works fine.
If you read the signing documentation, you'll see that there is a hw chip available for signing; the atsha204a. For encryption, there is the rfm69.

  • Yes, i did read that documentation.

So for encryption you prefer the atsha204a (hardware encryption) in combination with the rfm69 (433/868/915) Mhz radio ?

Typically, the encryption should work via the NRF2401 (2.4 Ghz) module though?
And you have already used it?

I am always ready to look for the error first with me 😉

P.S.👍 Many thx for your Support

    Regards

    LuFi

  • Contest Winner

@LuFi no, atsha204a is for signing. Nrf24 has no hw encryption support. Rfm69 has. I use nrf24 with software encryption for my tests. And if you use the simple password option, you get software based signing and software based encryption on all hw (except rfm69 based nodes).

  • All right, thank you. I'll look what I do wrong.

  • Contest Winner

@LuFi there is constant action on the development branch. It could be that something grew over a critical threshold for atmga328p based gateways with the simple signing option enabled. You could try to sift through log using git bisect if you have an older known good version. Signing and personalization has not been touched for some time. I have not tested any signing features since my last signing commit. You could start with 59337b19fe2280e3d375a5e70156c75379d18196

  • You are fully right, i tested again with the Version from 7 of June.
And now i'am able to see messages on node and Gateway.
Also was it be possible to enable MY_DEBUG.

How i need to register the node now ?

@LuFi you get a lot of NACKs. Have you checked your radio power supply etc? Many threads on the forum about radio issues. It is not a signing issue.

  • Both are PA Radios with Antenna, and on both i added an 47uf Capacitor.

What i do not understand is the Node not registerd Messge.

    LuFi

  • Contest Winner

@LuFi I am not an expert on those messages, I suggest you use the log parser on the homepage as I said earlier.
That said, I suspect they are there because your GW cannot get any messages through to the node, all SEND:s are NACKed. And it also looks like node and GW disasgree on protocol versions, at least that is what I think !TSF:MSG:PVER,1=2 means.

  • Oh, yes. But this happens since i first updated the gateway while the node was sending Data based on latest dev Version.

After that i updated the Node.

  • Contest Winner

@LuFi it is well known that sending full sized payloads (as you do when signing is enabled) puts a strain on the radio that nrf24 radios have trouble handling.
It could also be some bug on development branch present in the commit you use which has been fixed in a later commit. I also see that there are indications that your gw is configured as a repeater. I don't know if that has anything to do with it. I don't think it is supported to have a gw as a repeater. It at least makes no sense. But I could be wrong about that.
You could try the latest but without debugging and see if anything comes through that way, with and without signing.

  • I used the default Gateway sample Code.
    I will change this.

    Many thx for Support !

    Regards

    LuFi

@LuFi you are welcome. Hope it works out.
