ESP8266+ARduino as Gateway

Hi all
I am seeing all examples of ESP8266 being programmed with new firmware and then working as Gateway.Is it possible or already done where the ESP8266 is in the AT mode and the arduino can control it.
NRF24L01 ----->Arduino------>ESP8266
Has somebody done something like this.

@gopal_N Apart from the question why you would choose such a setup, it can be done by programming the Arduino as serial gateway and using the ESP8266 as serial-to-WiFi bridge.
