Thanks for the extensive reply, I'll come back with feedback once I got to test everything. Quick response wrt the battery: I already tested the better 3,7V Lithium battery on the new MySensors setup as well and it runs for a bit more than a week. The one in the picture (old setup) has been running for about half a year (since January). When using the 3x LR44 on the old setup it runs for months, with MySensors it runs a bit over a day.

Thanks guys for the responses. I think I may need to stick with nothing real time, but somehow record the images, then drive up to the pole and trigger a download from the SD card via RF. Just too many damning restrictions.

Sonoff switches are just esp8266 that you can reflash with your code

@mfalkvidd Thank you! It works. I was searching for "A0" not the GPIO number (newbie here) Thank you once again.

Has anyone thought of using serial over ethernet? I would think that you could do that similar to having a straight serial connection. I do believe that ESPEasy supports serial over ethernet. I can check when I get home since that is what I am running on all of my Sonoffs. I am using a custom plugin on my Vera to run them, but I do have a couple spare Sonoffs that I could try a serial connection with. The only thing would be what GPIO pins are available on a Sonoff or other ESP8266 device to act as the serial side of the gateway.

Higher security if you have incoming connections from outside your Lan and more flexibility if you have other devices accessing data directly on mqtt, but if you are running just your simple setup there is no real need

Welcome to the MySensors community @Alpachigo ! I haven't seen a low power solution for valves, but a discussion on the same topic is available at https://forum.mysensors.org/topic/6598/battery-powered-irrigation-controller/ For generic recommendations on battery-powered nodes see https://www.mysensors.org/build/battery if you haven't already.

@Yveaux Thanks. This is a battery run multisensor so ESP8266 is not an option. ESP32 is an overkill. I'm not that much familiar with other platforms so I suppose my only option is atmega1284 :((

@strangeoptics when using MQTT you could publish the messages persistent and have the slave request them on wakeup. That would implement some form of message queuing.
