💬 RS485

is it an alternative to the max485 chip?
-
It is using the MAX485, just the PCB is designed to connect it to Arduino Pro Mini by pin headers. The goal is to get small programmable device which can be connected to a bus network. This device could be used in low cost decentralized home automation project. Basically it is the same as popular breakout board for MAX485 (like this), but modified to have smaller footprint and two screw terminals for connecting to the bus. It also has a jumper for termination resistor and the enable signals can be configured by solder jumpers.

ok I see, like a small shield that goes over the programming pins of the pro mini.

Is it reasonable to hand solder the SMD components on a board like this?
-
there are 0603 components; if you have good soldering tip and steady hand it can be done

This is great, thanks!
One suggestion: add a switch mode regulator that can handle 12 or 24 volt DC input. This will allow small sensor devices to hang off a typical bus network having extra pairs for the central power supply.
