    • Wifi-Gateway - strange behaviour

I had a gateway running for about 3 weeks without any problems (Dev-Version)
Suddenly, it didn´t present messages to my controller
Strange thing was, if i did a recnnect on the controller, it worked for a few minutes
Even if i open a second putty session, i see the gateway, i see the main controller connecting

      0;255;3;0;14;Gateway startup complete.

but after a few minutes, no messages from the sensors
If i open another putty-instance, it works again for a few minutes.

I thought about a hardware fault, built everythaing again, so new ESP, new NRF, other power supply, but absolute same behaviour.

Maybe a problem that i only have sensor, so i only receive messages, send nothing ?
Or is it some messages in my network the Wifi-Gateway mis-interprets ?

Another possibility, depending on which controller you are using - send the "on" message each 60sec , and check on the controller side if this "alive" signal is there / missing

I was thinking of a similar system, but hadn´t time so far to realize it.
      The idea:

      • The sensor sends a "on" a soon as it gets power
      • Use a large capacitor to feed the sensor for some seconds after power-off (enough to send a command) , but sense directly with some diodes, if power is still there, if not, send "off"

      Hello Hek,

thank you so much to try to help me - i found the problem now and i guess it´s the same problem many others have here:
On almost all ESP12 GPIO 4 and 5 are labeled wrong
I didn´t use a NodeMCU, but one of the other available boards

As the CE pin is then connected to the wrong GPIO, it seems to work, Radio init ok, but as soon as the gateway sends something, it crashes

Here are some interesting posts about that:
      https://github.com/esp8266/Arduino/issues/437

Maybe you should ad this notice to the build-section for the wifi gateway ?

      Best regards

I don´t know how the nrf24l01 is implemented in mysensors, but have a look here:

I wrote somethong about it here:

so there must be something wrong in the code, if it´s working with the older regular Code, but not with the developer code

      Hello Hek,

i just saw in the german FHEM Forum, somebody has exactly the same Problems as me - but when switching back to the old / regular version, it works as expected, except the other problem with the long values.
SO it musst be a software thing, nothing hardware related

But as it is really strange you don´t get this problen, did any body else see it ?

      that´s the one i use: https://github.com/mysensors/Arduino/tree/development/libraries/MySensors/examples/GatewayESP8266
nothing modified, even still with DHCP

I also have a Ethernet Gateway, which is running since months, the problems started with the Wifi / ESP Gateway

So just to be totally sure and to help me and hopefully others, i did the following:

I feeded ESP and NRF from different power supplys-result is still the same, ESP hangs, no response

The Power supply of the ESP is the same as i use for many ESP-Easy-Projects, i even flashed ESP-Easy on these 2 boards i try to get the MySensors-Gateway running, no problems

      Hello Hek,

thanks a lot for all the effort trying to help me

Thats what the relay node gives me when plugging in power:

      Starting sensor (RNNNA-, 2.0.0-beta)

Not really something for feature request, more trouble shooting...

But the relay sensor was just an example, not connected to the gateway, node by itself.
I don´t even have to switch the relay - just the Wifi Gateway running, connected to putty
As soon as a sensor sends his startup message, Wifi Gateway crashes, no longer reachable

I´d be really happy if someone could try it, maybe it´s still my fault:
Power Up Wifi Gateway, then power up relay node ( both dev version) , i think it has something to do because relay node is also a repeater ?

      Hello Hek,

thanks a lot for your answer, i hopefully wasn´t to harsh ?

When do you expect 2.0.0 to come out ? Maybe it makes more sense for me to wait and put the project aside till then?

I didn´t want to change to the developer version, no need for the extra features, all i wanted was one / some wifi gateways because i have some positions in the house i couldn´t cover with wired gateways - and especially for the wifi gateway many people here said go with the dev version, it solves a lot of problems.
That´s where the problems started then, the mixture between old and new doesn´t work well in the arduino IDE.
Also some older examples here in the forum, i can´t use because i get compiling errors with the new developer version

I try to investigate further - so are the 1.5 version and the 2.0 dev compatible regarding already existing sensors ?
( I have to confess Arduino IDE makes it even worse, even when installing the portable version, it uses files from wherever...)

As you are speaking about stabilty problems regarding the Wifi-Gateway - i was thinking i made some faults, tried almost everything, but as i have many of the ESP8266 running without any problems with ESP-Easy, i couldn´t make that much faults regarding power supply and such things
(Easy thing to try , dev. Wifi Gateway, just connected to a putty sesion, dev relais sketch, as soon as powering the relais node on, it will crash)

So would you or others here suggest to use the wifi client at the moment, or better wait ?

At the moment, at germen FHEM Forum, some ordered about 100 PCBs to build Wifi Gateways, at the moment they are sending the first out, sounds stupid but i´d be lucky if they all work and i know a have to find the fault in my doing

    • Big Wish - a working system including up-to-date Reference

A real great project here, i follow since long, built many sensors, even ordered own PCBs.
Some of them worked now for over a year...

But now, as new projects came in mind, i needed more sensors, and more gateways, so i tried with the wifi gateway
That´s where my problems started - see my other topics here

I saw now, your work made a lot of progres, OTA-Update, message signing,....,

But now old and new sketches are not compatible any more, many compile errors

I have to confess, for a beginner, it´s really hard to follow, for most of the problems the experts here say "did you try the developer version? " - the developer version is, as the name says, developer level, no waranty it works...

So please, could you update the build page ? Or maybe if you prefer take some things like the wifi gateway out till it´s really working ?
Please understand that some people find this page and think, wow, that´s exactly what i need, i´ll order the parts and build it, they want to spend time in automate the house, not in debugging faults.

Please don´t understand me wrong, i know all this is done privately just for fun, but imagine a beginner seeing the nice pages in the build-area, thinking, wow, really easy, but then it starts to get really time consuming

I still have the same problem, it worked now for about 5 days on the workbench, brought it to the final desination, crashes after some hours

But i always could still ping the ESP

What i wonder most about is, that sometimes when i replug the power it says radio init ok, but it doesn´t receive messages
( i see on other gateway that messages are definetly sent)

Is there any possibility to restart the gateway remotely ? Or only chance to replug power ?
Could it be it´s a problem with the initialization of the radio ?

Is it maybe because in my set-up, the gateway is only receiving, never sending anything ?

The gateway lays avbout one meter away from a raspberry (no wifi) , but i can´t imagine that causes the problems ?

      Any help / ideas welcome.

unfortunately, there are notr more than 5 connections, only my FHEM - installation and me playing around with one, max 2 instances of putty

but as i´m experimenting with it right now it looks like there is a problem with the radio

I tried re-pluging power many times, sometimes i get in in a state where it says "radio init ok", but doesn´t receive messages

I re-checked all the wires (only 10K Pull-Down at GPIO15 , the other lines to Radio are in Mega-Ohm Areas, so no wrong resistors on my ESP-Board)
I tried to add small / large capacitors to the Vcc Line
I swapped the NRF2401 - 3 different batches now, which even look different.
I swapped the wall-wart to a regulated laboratory power supply
      --> all the same result

      I have about 5 of these ESP-Boards running with ESP-Easy since weeks, so i can´t imagine it´s a fake ESP-Unit ?

Any further ideas what to try ?

Thats what i already did, that´s what i get after a diconnect / connect and then a inclusion-mode on / off in my controller software.

      0;255;3;0;14;Gateway startup complete.
      0;255;3;0;2;2.0.0-beta
      0;255;3;0;14;Gateway startup complete.
      0;255;3;0;2;2.0.0-beta
      0;255;3;0;5;1
      0;255;3;0;5;0

But no messages from the sensors.
Should there be additional messages when in debug mode ?

So as there are no changes in Channel / ID, i see only the possibilities that i either damaged the NRF or that something is different with the Developer version

I´ll try to flash the old software again this evening

    • Easy way to configure ID / channel

I built various sensors for me, friends,...
I have to use several because of to heavy walls

I learned here how to add a Jumper to clear eeprom during boot, so i could handle out sensors to anybody, then the sensor is once started with the Jumper, then ready for it´s new place

But now trouble starts with channel / ID - i have to use different ones, because of the different Gateways
I expect that even to be a problem chrashing my ESP8266-Gateway

Does anybody have a good idea how to handle that`?

My idea is to have a box full of sensors, take one, and adapt it to the desired gateway
I can´t flash each one again to the desired ID, because as all of you know, which was the right IDE, which was the right sketch,....

For the start, it should at least be in the sketch itself, not in another file....

At the moment they use same Channel and base ID, as it´s, i have to confess, very complicated to change them each time in the file and to recompile everything.

But i will try tomorrow to give them different ID´s / Channels.

WHat confuses me even more, and i don´t expect to get help here, but as i use FHEM, i saw, that ID´s i deleted in the past were reasigned to new sensors, with some values from the old / deleted ones, maybe that´s already where the problems start....
I think the easiest for me would be to Switch either to the developer Version- as said it´s ot receiving all Messages, or use the MQTT Gateway, but how to get it in inclusion mode ? Do i understand it right that the MQTT ESP Gateway will handle the allowed childs by itself and broadcast the Messages of only These childs to the MQTT Broker ?

    • RE: ESP8266 Gateway - loosing messages ?

I investigated further - the developer version still only gets some messages, seems like radio reception is partly not working ?

The old / stable version crashes not when going to inclusion mode, but after initiating inclusion mode, then when the first node sends something.

I tried to use different power sources - didn´t change anything 😞

Tried even the MQTT Gateway - can´t get in into iclusion mode ?
(i uncommented the inclusion part, connected a switch , should there be any debug message when hitting that switch ? )

THE ESP is node a NodeMCU, but another chinese developer Board, but it runs fine with EasyESP, so i don´t think that is the cause

I have other gateways running and at the moment, all are at the same channel, but i can´t think this is the cause for a reset of the ESP ?
