@hek: hi. yes I have one gesture sensor eval board. This one :
https://www.sparkfun.com/products/12787
I played a little bit with it few months ago, very basic tests like the lib examples!. But, mine (sparkfun) use an APDS9960 which is much better than APDS9930 for the gesture recognition (good to know) apds9930 are common on aliexpress. I searched for cheap apds9960 but nothing.
And the fun is that I have sort of actuator pcb in progress for this chip and other funny things..that is not the lowpower thing, lol (the sensor itself is 100uA mini in light sleep low sampling, due to the irled). but I don't care this time I want to make something less serious, which could last months..not bad, depends for what

Do you know at what distance does it detect the gestures? this could be cool to build into my "behind the couch ambient light system"..

@tbowmo: for the apds9960, maybe 10cm, 15..It was not big tests. you can change settings for the ir power vs range, sampling.. When I have tested it I thought the range was not bad. I had the same idea with a little bit more fun than gesture only (in progress for a while !..and I'm thinking for this one to use atsam too...) For the 9930 chinese boards, I recently bought one, price was cheap. Not cool, they were saying "apds9960". I have not tested this one yet.

I bought a couple of the cheap one. If it sucks I can use it as light sensor
