The basic NRF24L01 with a pcb antenna is good for local transmissions limited to few meters inside a house. To improve the transmission range you can use NRF24L01+PA+LNA (Power Amplifier and Low Noise Amplifier) but the setting can be difficult due to noise problems and grounding.
One solution I implemented succesfully allows transmissions from inside house to the poolhouse on the other side of the garden using two shielded NRF24L01+PA+LNA.

The shielding is very simple. I used an aluminium sheet to pack the radio pcb.!0_1460361723190_blindage NRF24L01.png .
Before I wrap a plastic film around the pcb to isolate electrically.
After wraping the aluminium sheet you can add an extra plastic film to isolate from other components.
It does not look nice but it solved perfectly my range issue.

The NRF24L01+PA+LNA is powered using a voltage regulator AMS1117 (5V to 3.3V) and a 47uF Capacitor to improve the filtering on the 3.3V line. The radio is connected to an Arduino Nano.
