Practical difference: not much in the Arduino home automation world. But I prefer NPN since that's what the MySensors examples use.

Imo in all cases the pulldown should be on the controlling pin (gate). Otherwise listen to @mfalkvidd ;)

@moskovskiy82 Have a look at my Fire pit RGB striplight controller, The Mosfets in that project run very cool (can't detect any heat rise at all) with 10m of rgb strip lighting connected.
