  ACK -aka ECHO beeing missed by Serial Gateway with RF24 radios. V2.3.2

  First let me say that the test "network" consists of a single node and a Serial GW with a Domoticz controller only. No repeater nodes are present and it operates at 250Kbd on a frequency outside of the WiFi spectrum verified to have no traffic. The test subjects are within 10 feet of each other and the protocol sniffer receiver is placed roughly midway between the two communicating nodes. The test node has a plugable connector for the RF modules so that I can switch them out separately. The GW has the LNA/PA module and the node is using the standard mudules. Both GW and node are set to "High" power. Looking at the problem with the promiscuous protocol sniffer and wireshark I can clearly see that packets collide mid air when both the node and the GW transmitting at the same time. This happens when the controller/GW talks to the node while having the protocol ACK request enabled and the node does not have the extra wait/delay programmed. Going through 12 RF modules node side, I can see that about 1/3 shows the problem consistently to the extent that all 16 retransmissions are used up , 1/3 to various degrees and the rest shows no problems at all. Before you say "ohh fake chips etc." these modules all came from the same batch, so more than likely not fake and non fake, but rather some parameter that the lib assumes to tight of a margin for. When turning off the protocol level ACK via the controller/GW, the package goes out without an request for the node to send back the package, only the HW ack remains in the picture. Setup like this I can see that the third of the modules that cause the persistent collisions evoke a re-send of the package by the GW after ~2 to 2.5ms , while the group that shows no problem shows one single transmission from the GW only. Since the sniffer is not fast enough to capture the quick turn around ( spec says 130us) for the short HW ack to go out I can not get say whether the node is simply not sending it or just not sending it in quick enough. All I can say is that the GW code did not see a HW ack and therefore sends out the package a second time. Meanwhile on the node side all is well, it just might get the same package twice and since no status changed there is no harm done. However when you now turn on the protocol level ACK request in the controller ( as you should) the node has to turn around and send out the echo package which then collides with the resend of the original package from the GW. The node also doesn't get an HW-ACK becasue of this and tries to resend the echo package over again until it runs out of tries. When I then introduce the wait/delay in the code above to wait out the 2.5Ms for the GW to resend the initial package this ACK/resend storm goes away because the air is clear when the node sends it's echo package. If I wait/delay for 2 ms the problem is greatly reduced and if I wait 3 ms I see no more evidence of collisions. Either wait or delay works however, I choose delay() to be positively sure that no other communication is started during that time by the node. I conclude that as a work around this solves the issue we are having with the RF24 transport, but without further investing into faster RF sniffing equipment I can't say for sure if this could be solved better on the TX side by waiting longer for the HW ack to arrive from the receiving node, however I think there would be a good chance for that. There is also a chance that the PA/LNA module used on the GW could be part of the problem by not being able to switch quickly enough back to RX mode and therefore loose the HW-ACK for nodes that respond quicker than others. Edited: Checked with a non PA/LNA module on the GW and no change could be observed, so this theory can be discounted. BTW: All of this is very reminiscent of an email communication in 2015 I had with Ekblad !! GS

  @mfalkvidd No, the issue with sleep(0) still exists in V2.3.2. That is the version that the ArDuino Library installer installs currently . -- Work around is to call hwPowerDown(WDTO_SLEEP_FOEREVER) as in above code if you want the battery to last more than a day. GS

  @OldSurferDude I've run into a similar issue where I was sending data from the controller to an actuator node with mutliple relays and having commands get dropped when sent in rapid succession. I agree that an extra millisecond of wake time every 4 hours will make a negligible difference on total power draw and I'm OK adding a wait now that I know that I need to do it. I agree that it might not make sense to build this support in to MySensors unless we find the optimized time with your method and then... I don't know... add a hacky/naive solution of having the RFM95W sleep implementation block before sending the sleep command,... I don't know the MySensors architecture whether that's even feasible without breaking some rules. My secondary point of posting was definitely just to add to the knowledge base in this forum so someone else trying to put a Lora radio to sleep would find this and save some time.

Two moments, or I did a very bad control of the amplifier on the node nRF52 or in the radio driver itself, something is not working well, and may need some delay settings. If i send messages with an ECHO (soft ack) request, this works fine over very long distances. Hw ack does not work properly. Someone was able to do this for mysensors? Gateways and repeaters on nrf5 with amplifier is a very, very cool topic.

  @Yveaux I also add the delay to not ddos the gateway. When I did the MySensors workshop, 20 people started to connect to the gateway almost at the same time. And they got Funky messages. Since then I do a delay. But it would probably be better to add a random time to the delay. Something like 20ms + random( 0 - 30 ) ms. That way you don't get the ddos effect. Sonoff had the same problems with their solution a couple of years ago, when the servers went down. All Sonoff devices tried to reconnect almost the at the same time. Which caused a ddos xd

  @mfalkvidd In addition, since the later sensors are seeing it, it's probably just that the power supply is drooping before the voltage regulation on it can catch up. They kind of have 'inertia' and can take a bit to respond, and of course every power supply is different, based on how it's built. So likely the capacitors are helping it ride through the first transmission, and then the power supply 'catches up' for the later ones, but the second one gets garbled with the lower power, and the receiving radio chucks it as a bad packet.

  Hi @all I modified the MySensorsCore.cpp as tekka did on Github. Now my sendHeartbeat() is received by FHEM and it is working fine! Thanks a lot to all! @rejoe2 I just tested to send with MYSController 0;0;3;0;18; and the Gateway was answering like before.

This is a backwards incompatibility - thanks for reporting! @joaoabs You should be able to fix this by using the SecurityPersonalizer example from the 2.3.1 lib and copy/paste the settings section from your current sketch to the example sketch. @Anticimex issue originates from replacing all signerSHA256xyz() functions in the cryptoHAL

  @ッanteroッ this forum deals with MySensors, while your question does not seem to be related to MySensors at all. There are likely better forums to post such questions. My impression is you received a faulty LED strip, with bad connections making some parts light with a different color than expected. I suggest you take it back to the shop.

  @philippe-57 And why wait 3 weeks for new PCB? Simply cut bad connections on PCB a and make correct connection with wire. And four RS485 connectors on gateway? RS 485 is bus - from one node to next, all in one line. Not star topology. If you plan connect four nodes with 20 m of cable to those connectors - you will be in troubles. Gateway must be connected like other normal nodes. Only sw is different.

  @lasp Hi there and welcome to this forum! There will be a Maker Faire in Eindhoven this year, on September 29 & 30, but mySensors will not host a booth there! We hosted one last year and although it was a huge success the core team has insufficient resources to repeat this year. Where's the wrong date mentioned you're referrring to in your post?

  @rolandow You can up/downgrade using the Library Manager in the Arduino IDE if you like. It is OK to mix nodes with different 2.x versions in the same network, so you can use 2.1.1 for your atmega168 nodes and 2.2.0 on your other nodes. Personally I use git to switch between different MySensors versions. I clone MySensors into the library folder and just switch branches.

  Just use 2 of the 4 batteries you have, solder a wire extra on the battery holder and you have 3v. If I were you I'd buy some 3.3v pro mini and some LiFePo4 AA batteries that have the correct voltage for everything.

  Tried that, still having problems. Syslog says a lot of: "mysgw: Client 0: 0:0:3:0:18:PING with an occasional "rsyslogd-2007: action 'action 17' suspended, which is probanly about the log being spammed by MySensors. It uses a 3.3v stabiliser board. Tried different power levels in settings (usually use low power because it works better for the cheap Chinese knock-offs) Tried external 5v power supply. My nodes are saying 'FPAR: NO REPLY'

  Wtf, I uninstalled the arduino SAMD boards and now it works with everything on the latest version. I could have swore that was a requirement, but even if not, I can now not use any samd boards but sensebender. -edit- lol, I did remove it but it decided it wasn't going anywhere and actually stayed installed even though I clicked remove, it claimed to have removed it and it no longer said installed but compiling worked. So after that I upgraded the Arduino IDE to the latest version (trying earlier versions was just one of the many things I tried) and when it finished and I opened the IDE, the samd boards were showing as installed again but everything was working. I already tried this combination and it didn't work. Heck, I tried it more than once. Yet somehow this time, the errors disappaered even though the files all seem in the same places they were in before.   Hello, I have had some other problems too, one of them was the reconnections-after-30-sec problem with Domotics (via Synology). To solve this I have compiled my UNO (with ethernet shield at top) 2 minutes ago and now I have full contact with Domotics (on Synology NAS). Start playing now ... thanks for the inspiration!

  Hmm.. I didn't even know that feature was available. Must be something new since the last update. I've made some css changes (one file which is applied regardless of theme selected) to allow the main site header, but I only adapted this for the default theme. Would be really hard to make this work for all themes as they have different font sizes and behaviour.

  @tekka I tried to add your code to my test sketch on my mega2560 and I do get the "interrupt" printed to serial, but only when sleep time is over, I can't get it to wake up. I'm still on library 2.1.0.

  @mfalkvidd, Thanks! Works like a charm now! I've included now DHT sensor in this sketch as well Testing so far. So, another question To tell sketch when to send data I'm using: unsigned long SLEEP_TIME = 1000; Now it's sending every 1 second. But my goal is to change it to send data only when there's a value change.   @jpaulin Fix is now in development (also tested on ESP8266) and sleeping issue is also solved. Node will now finish its LED pattern before going to sleep.

  Yes, the site is manually updated (improvements is on its way). Must have missed the sleep updates when doing the overview. Doxygen is always the best place/most correct place to look. And we'll probably move over to pure doxygen once it covers a majority of the library.

  The mysensors 2.0 code works fine with pimatic, no matter whether you use the 2.0 MQTT Esp gateway via mosquitto (or another) as service in combination with the MQTT plugin, or via my mysensors 2.0 gateway with rest-api (also thanks to @Yveaux a.o.), mentioned in the other topic.

  In newer Domoticz versions it tries to ping the gw. If something is blocking this (like another controller) it will reset and try to connect again. This happened to me when i connected two controllers (Domoticz + Myscontroller) to the same ethernet gw...

  @flopp same experience here, The sketch provided by Mysensors.org does not switch on/off the LED used to detect the dust particle (code below with corrections). I tested that sensor (Sharp_GP2Y1010AU) with smoke and because it does not have a fan (like the nova fitness SD011) or does not create a draft with a resistor (like the Shinyei PPD42NS) the fumes can go around completely undetected. When i tested the sharp and Shinyei in parallel the later seemed a lot more reliable. I also modified the code for the sharp sensor to get the arduino to loop thru multiple readings before sending a smoothed result back to the gateway.   @TheoL the sensebender is runing on 8Mhz as default. Originally I made so that it could switch to 1Mhz in order to lower the current consumption. But since we are sleeping for 99% of the time, where it's only the watchdog timer that is running, I don't see that much of a power savings running at 1Mhz, compared to 8Mhz. In theory if running on 1Mhz the awaken time is also 8 times longer, than when it's running on 8Mhz.. So that can also contribute to a more "equal" power consumption. So in short.. Compile for 8Mhz

  Until the problem will be solved, the solution is to use other range numbers for gateway relays, I go for single numbers in nodes (1, 2 ...) and high range for the gateway (101, 102...). I also have updated my examples on GitHub and use this approach to my project very close to final stage.

  @Francois I have the same issue and my gateway freeze even with node sending temperature. I read something about 2 capacitors : one chemical 4.7uF and a non polarized around 10nF, I'll try it soon. I don't have 10uF or higher as @drock1985 mentioned to test. Do you ?

  Hi @doblanch! This issue was resolved in 1.5 and if you are using 1.5 you should do fine! My repeaters use 1.5 and works great.

  Thanks for answer, yes I was talking about the Codebender. to try to keep moving, I have downloaded the API libraries and installed the Arduino IDE, I have downloaded the sketches and Arduino IDE is able to upload them without any problem. Then I go back to Codebender and deleted all the libraries in my main page (my account in codebender) then I clone the sketch with libraries but I got a compiling error, now is it different message. Then I Clone again the sketch, I go to my account in CB and deleted de MySensors library, and return to the sketch in codebender and now it compile the sketch correctly. I was thinking it will not compile because I was deleting the MySensors library after clone and before compiling. Another trick for my Codebender Notebook. Regards and thanks.

  sorry for digging up this older thread but I do have a very similar problem: Ijust build a Ethernet gateway with the W5100 module and the gateway starts then works for a while and will freeze after generating a reading like this: 0;0;3;0;9;read: 103-103-0 s=2,c=1,t=38,pt=7,l=5:17806714000000.000000 103 is a temperature sensor which works totally fine on a serial gateway. I can not reproduce this error but it happens within minutes of a fresh start. I still can ping the gateway, the power source is a PC USB port (for now) the radio has no Capacitor on 3,3V any clue where to start debugging (I am fairly new to arduino/MySensors) thanks

  in openhab , dimmer switch change only two state 0 and 100.   Hi, have you tried increasing the delay after the conversion command is send to the DSs? I have noted this behavior when the very first conversion of the DS is not waited long enought to finish, athts why its returning 85 Cº, wich is the power on state of the scratchpad.   They are not receiving an ack from the GW.. Is the GW properly defined? Do it have sufficient power for the radio attached, and do you have a capacitor across the supply lines of both node and GW radios

  Haha. Yep, the sun is the reference. Agree, this is a "bug". The problem with the current V_* is that it contains no unit information. A backward compatible solution for this for the 1.5 release would be to introduce a V_LIGHT_LEVEL_LUX. Not pretty but it solves the problem without breaking anything. 2.0 will hopefully solve this without introducing different V_*. https://github.com/henrikekblad/Arduino/blob/development/libraries/MySensors/MyMessage.h#L360 ...and no, I cannot give an estimate when it is out

  Well, since radio uses SPI I guess if there was an issue, nothing would work But the SPI flash device might have some special requirements which was broken. I use a hacked EthernetGW since my commit that manages SPI_EN signal was removed from development branch so I am not using fully "vanilla" code though. But that is a HW problem in the W5100 module, not in the libraries and my fix is a workaroud for that specific HW isse (and only applicable on W5100:s with SPI_EN accessible to the AVR.

  But what will happen with the NodeID and the signing preferences then? If EEPROM is cleared if you update your gateway you have to restart all nodes using signing so the gateway gets updated then. If you do it in a node, the gateway will assign it a new nodeId and that in turn messes up for the controller. I do not think wiping all EEPROM config on reprogramming is a good ide. The purpose of the EEPROM config is exactly to preserve certain parameters on power cycle/reprogramming.

  sensor id is not the same as node id. sensor id = 255 is used for internal stuff like id request and battery level for node. You can assign 0-254 to your own attached sensors (to the arduino node).

  For now i found this solution: I changed a pressureAvg and pressureSamples to unsigned int. Next changed int forecast = sample(pressure) to int forecast = sample(pressure * 10) to avoid big precision lost. Sample function still may need correction but probably it is a good and easy way to fix this problem. Result: Sketch uses 18,636 bytes (60%) of program storage space. Maximum is 30,720 bytes. Global variables use 1,268 bytes (61%) of dynamic memory, leaving 780 bytes for local variables. Maximum is 2,048 bytes.

  Yes, when sending an request you expect and M_ACK answer back from gateway. (This has changed to a SET back in the version I'm working on now).

  @andriej Hi, I had problem using the main branch mysensors/Raspberry, that because of the bit-field struct (header_s) in Sensor.h They will get packed in different order on the arduino compared to the RPi (at least with my compiler, gcc). In order to fix this I created the 1.4dev branch. It uses full bytes instead of the bit-fields, but you need (of cause) to compile both the sensors (arduino) and the gateway (RPi) using the 1.4dev branch. We need to fix this in the main branch later on (and use the same files as in mysensors/Arduino/libraries/MySensors)
