This site has the best collection I have found: http://www.embeddedworks.net/wsim3951.html In the US the T-Mobile pre-paid seems to be the best deal. Similar on sparkfun https://www.sparkfun.com/products/13186

@miro it doesn't make much difference which you use. I use 4.7uF. Some users combine one large and one small capacitor, for example 4.7uF and 470uF. The smaller is better at eavening out quick fluctuations while the larger can handle more powerful fluctuations. The capacitor needs to handle the same voltage as the power source. The ones I have are specified for 50V but as low as 6V should work.

And I just noticed the internet has been down at the greenhouse since early Saturday! More reason to have a local install.

@bpair Yes, split by \n, I also tried the timeout option as a start, but changed to \n.. I've made a couple of plugins for Node-Red, that could be used to parse / generate messages to mysensors serial gw. (Links other places in the forum)

Thanks - your schematic/drawing is really helpful. I just ordered some of those step-up components and a few sensebenders.

Thanks for all the comments but it looks like the issue was actually my Asus RT-N66U router which has LAN-WAN firewall. When enabled it was doing wan traffic to my gateway but not allowing a response from my gateway out.

      NeverDie

I notice Wemos sells one which they claim can supply up to 300ma at 3.3v: https://www.aliexpress.com/store/product/WEMOS-CH340G-Breakout-5V-3-3V-USB-to-serial-module/1331105_32664922086.html?spm=2114.8147860.0.0.lHm5wW So far it's the only one I've found that can supply decent current at 3.3v. A lot of the alternatives can barely supply 50ma at 3.3v. 50ma is adequate for signalling, but often not enough for also powering a project.

One more update. The port forwarding was not a complete fix. The real culprit was my Asus RT-N66U router which has LAN-WAN firewall. When enabled it was allowing wan traffic to my gateway but not allowing a response from my gateway out to the controller.

@bpair My apologies for misunderstanding, last couple of months i heard that exact same sentence but with a different meaning you gave it. Limiting possible, all though it has been running with 50+ devices and tests with multiple pi's connected are going well. Especially on the quad core pi2. That would certainly be a nice thing! All though i think the roadmaps and primary goals are quite different where the base is the same, connect things. It is very difficult to choose a right controller for education as there are an enormous amount of resources. An example would be the Bendoobox (from a dutch company, (i do not know if there is any mysensors support for it)) which is aiming at education. I think aimed at 12, 13, 14 year olds (average). It would be nice if there are more like these solution and hopefully for your goals.
