Debugging a sensor with external power supply

I have a sensor that is being fed ~8v throught a rectifier from 9v ac. something is not right - I can't see the sensor in domoticz and the leds flash are not the same as regular usb. however, when I connect the 5v usb cable to the computer to see the log, it seems that everything is awesome.... is there a way of still getting the messages without the power?
