  MySensors is primarily wireless, but not wifi (as in wireless IEEE 802.11). We do have wired options as well with RS485 / RS232 I do not think that ethernet (as in IEEE 802.3) is the best option for sensor networks for home-sensors, It requires too many wires to each sensor point, and too complex transciever hardware on each sensor node. RS485 is more suitable for this purpose.

  Problem Solved! When compiling, you must select Processor: ATmega 328 (3.3v, 8Mhz). Then the Serial Monitor will be fine at 9600 baud with the 3.3v Pro Mini.

  To put it pretty simply, a gateway is a way to convert and move data from one protocol to another. For example, At some point I am hoping to create a MySensors gateway that will let the MySensors protocol talk to my RCS serial thermostat that runs on an RS485 serial network and uses a protocol written by RCS.

  Are you sure you have the correct comport selected? If so and you are on a Windows machine, check the com port in the device manager to make sure it is set up properly, e.g. now yellow exclamation point (). If you have the yellow exclamation in device manager, you will need to resolve that issue first, which will most likely be a driver issue.

  I need some help in finding a case for this setup. Here is a list of stuff that goes in it: VA display shown above on the top or side. around 6 DC 2.1mm connectors. All the mysensors circuitry. I will probably be using the myS or slimnode pcb. hall effect sensor module as linked in post above. Still waiting on some of the parts to trickle in so that I can get a better idea of the space I need but I am open to suggestions. -AM

  @y4CdW42Ol8 Try compiling with SDA instead of A4 and SCL instrad of A5 in the pinmode function. This should make the sketch board independant. And then use the correct pins on each board.

However I had set the value at the wrong place without realizing the pulseCount is reset at the Void setup() section. // Water Reset pulsecount pulseCountW = oldPulseCountW = 0; // Zonnepanelen Reset pulsecount pulseCountZ = oldPulseCountZ = 0; The solution is Change the 0 to : Value (meter) - Value (Controller) Upload the sketch. wait until the first pulse is sent to the gateway. If successed the controller (domoticz in my case) will show the total value matching the value on the physical meter. Now change the value in the sketch back to 0. (Otherwise each time you reset the sensor or the gateway the value wil be added to the total value.) Upload the sketch to the sensor. You are done. There is no need to Modify the Domoticz database with SQL tool. You will get the value you've just added to the total value in the day value log. If you find this ignoring you can delete this value the next day. This only applies to Energy meter. Do not apply this to the water meter as the result the total value of the water meter will be gone too.

  Very cool stuff you are doing here. I have been messing with my Media Center and ways of getting all this media played easily anywhere whether it is movies, TV shows or music for several years. I also wanted all my media to be stored in a single place and be available not only in the house, but also anywhere I have internet access. Here is most of what the latest version look likes. I currently have two Raspberry Pi running Kodi in my office and Family room. I have a third Raspberry Pi running MySQL to store the common media's meta data in for both media centers. This is great stuff. One of them is my DNLA media server, and I use Kodi to setup the connections to the network shares on my NAS for use in the DNLA server. About 2 years ago I put together the following. I have one of these in the master bedroom and the backyard. They have been working very well. Raspberry Pi HiFiBerry Amp+ A case that works with both of these. Bookshelf speakers And this is how I made it all work. http://blog.scphillips.com/posts/2014/05/playing-music-on-a-raspberry-pi-using-upnp-and-dlna-v3/ The other part of my adventure has been a BubbleUPnP server and BubbleUPnP android app on my phone. The sever brings some additional features. Secure access to my media from the internet. It enables you to create a second OpenHome DNLA render for every one on your network. This lets you queue up your music or videos using your phone and be able to leave to go get some beer during the party and not loose the music. Re-encode on the fly my Blu-Ray quality movie files to a smaller size so I can watch them remotely through via internet. I am right in the middle of my next generation Music rendering adventure. It will be using Chomecast Audio. You are now able to group more then one of these together to be able to play the same music in multiple rooms for very little money. I will be connecting one of these to my stereo in my office and family room. I will be putting something close to the following in the living room, backyard and side yard.   You don't need 2 gw to build such a Setup. Simply use the Mqtt persistence addon and set up a persistence rule for everything you want/need in your monitoring. Openhab will push every change of your items to your mqtt broker

  @Boots33 Thanks for the help. The main problem was how to set the time when the doors are opened. I have tried several attempts and everytime the timer is reset. Therefore the buzzer will never be triggered because the timer and the current time is always the same. I have solved this problem.   @csa02221862 A nice board if you look at the total package. However these are basic triac dimmer circuits (AC) with optocoupler isolation. You need to be aware that the steering circuit (arduino/ raspberry) needs to take care of the zero cross detection and firing of the triacs. It has been discussed a few times on this forum. Basically a circuit like this: Where the upper part measures the "AC sine wave" (needed only once) and the part below the steering circuit (to be repeated for each channel) Building it with Ailexpress parts should not cost you more than €/$ 1 per channel. But as I said you don't get the complete assembled package)

  @bjacobse RF circuit is mine, based on many simulations etc., so I can't fall back on 3rd party designs. Yes, it will have to be certified globally, as much as possible. I've been involved with the approval cycle in the past, so I'm familiar with how this works. I'm too old for financial involvements with other people, so I'll just have to see what "shakes out". I'm "beating the bushes" now for potential manufacturers who may want to procure the design outright. Thanks for your input.

  Thanks.. I did break down and order 10 of the nrf radios last night... should be here tomorrow.. In thinking it through more, it seems that it's shortsighted of me to want everything on Wifi just because it's familiar.. I'd end up needing eventually to possibly expand my subnet, have to be reliant on an access point that is probably being killed by my son playing online games, etc.. I'm sure there's a learning curve to the NRFs, but from what I read about their low power requirements and the advantage of all of the self healing, it seems it's the right way to go.. Thanks for the info!

  Hi. I know this topic is a few months old now, but I'm wondering if you were able to accomplish what you wanted to do. I have a wifi gateway set up and would like to do something similar but with Home Genie as the broker running on a Raspberry PI. Did you have to modify the MQTT Client code much to fit your needs? I'm new to MySensors, but I've been researching topics as much as possible before I dive into the code. Can you point me to the version of the client code that worked for you? I would appreciate any help or tips as I am eager to set up several sensors around the house and perhaps a relay to control a garage door. Thanks.

  Ok got it working. But now i see the main problem. When you change the colour - there is a lag so othe colours are seen. Same goes to switching off. For example we were at white light fullbrightness than switched off. You can first see the light becoming yelow, than blue than off. How can this be fixed? If i understand correctly - you have to pass all these HSB value processing to arduino and have the controller send 3 values at once. Are there any examples?

  It would be cool to be able to do the other way around... have wifi/bluetooth recievers listen and determine when someone was nearby. This could be used without the need for any application installed on your phone. Anyone have any pointers for a system like that? I know we use it in stores for example to measure visitors and how they move within stores/malls.

  Update: I figured out how to make a few changes to the Vera device display. Now for some reason all three are reading from one analog pin. I have each one of them set on A0, A1, A2. Never mind as I was writing this post I think I figured out what I done wrong. For some reason I had the A0 pin defined twice in my sketch. Still need to test it an see that's the problem. And the only thing I have left to try an figure out is in the Vera Scenes the language is still in French. Anybody have any ideas how I can fix this??

  @AWI I fully agree! The AM2302 (aka DHT-22) does not work, when the supply drops slightly below 3.3V, while the AM2321works at much lower voltage. I have used the AM2321 for more than 6 months to monitor my greenhouse

  @erangel - well not sure if I understand you, but yes - you can have a raspberry pi as gateway (search the forum) and then have arduino as nodes talking with the gateway wireless.

The code if somebody will be building something similar... 4 push buttons attached and 3 dimmers + MQ and DHT22 All the logic is supposed to be handled by the controller. Problems remaining... If you set the button state in the controller - it doesn't get updated on the node... Any hints appreciated on this And the major problem - if the node resets the LIGHTS are ON! As has been hinted in another topic the code has to be rewritten so in the beginning it sets the values to zero and informs the controller isntead of pulling values. But my lack of knowledge stops me on this one.   Hello, Measure A socket directly is always a risk. just take a power adapter, power the Mysensors Note and send a Life Bit to your Application. Is the Outlet power down the Note send no Life Bit and your Application can send a E-Mail. regards Thomas

  @Mark-Swift let us know how they perform. The supplier looks very professional. Would be interesting if they really reach the promised 2.1km (I wonder with which antenna) even better to use 3.3v (hence on my next one to play it safe I'll use a spare 5v -> 3.3v level shift converter too). Or use a 3.3V pro mini.

  The MySensors project was created to bypass the rigorous rules of z-wave and closeness of their protocol and source code. MySensors is capable of everything on your list every node is a repeater low power encryption I addition we provide message authentication and "standardized" OTA updates capability. The latest version of z-wave addresses some of their previous security problems.. but considering their closeness it's hard to know how good they are.

  gw.process is called in the loop, so messages should be processed even with repeater mode turned off. I suggest upgrading the library to 1.5.4 for the nodes, as the bug regarding payloads was solved with that version.

Begin with the end in mind, I say. It will save you a lot of time, headaches, and $ down the road. Thanks for effort! However, I just feel that it's way more complex, which is a bit unfortunate. It's not motivating for me to change software/hardware over time, it feels a bit unnecessary and it may increase the odds of adding devices in an non-optimal way. The things is that I don't have so many devices to start with and I see this as a project. Therefore, getting a solution, that will eventually solve all my problems, is more suitable for me. I don't need to think so much about the hardware/software, instead, I can focus on the devices and what they can do together I don't mind learning new stuff, it's just that I already have a pile of those things already haha, or at least time consuming hobbies/duties. In the future, I would like to have the following: lamps, sensors, kitchen appliances, blinds, speakers, TV, smoke detectors, alarm system, assistance/surveillance for pets and kids. I want multiple integration and communication to set up scenarios; Moreover, dinner time, movie time, gaming time, morning routines, alarm package, party or social gatherings and so forth.

  @hek Thanks for the quick reply. Now that I understand that things are operating as intended it is not really an issue. The serial GW appears to be very reliable and I plan to have it and the controller on a UPS. From my perspective, I'll treat the GW as part of the controller. Providing the controller is reliable then I'm OK.... On a side note, in your other posts you point to your example which uses the ACK to set the relay. Although this is very elegant it does not suit my case where I want the relays to be stand alone such that they continue to operate the lights, extractor fan,etc. when the GW/controller is down. This is way more important (to me) than the possibility of the controller getting out of sync occasionally. I have been considering using Z-Wave for some of the relays but there does seem to be plenty of issues with that protocol .... sigh! @mfalkvidd Thank you for the link. Unfortunately my searching skills aren't too good...it's an age thing I agree that documentation is the important thing here. If we understand how the protocols work then we can live within their limitations. MySensors already does way more then I expected and way easier too. If I have to use some Z-Wave or even hard wire something, it's no big deal (well now that Domoticz, OpenHAB, etc. can bring them all together). Well that's my theory for now Cheers Chris

  A power bank (or et least the ones I used) has a very high self discharge. Most of the times these consist of a a few lithium cells with a cheap (boost) regulator. Better use standard (rechargable) cells.

  @sundberg84 Got it all to work after using a new Atmel328 chip on a extra Arduino Uno board I had. I'm guessing the clone board, from china, I was trying to use has some kind of issue with eeprom or some other issue.   @hek Pretty familiar with NTP/NTPD, but I'm doubtful that I can get a response time in milliseconds for activating the program. It will probably take a second or two. That's ok to begin some sort of flashing sequence by clicking a single button, but the colorpicker sends messages nonstop while moving around the wheel. I've seen those messages get queued and take many seconds to catch up after color selection has stopped. As quick as it is, it's just not quick enough! Then there is the precision. I wonder how well 13 devices can be synchronized on time? Milliseconds in difference will cause patterns to break, of course.

The main problem of this approach is the delay time between the request and the action, because the audio must be translated by google and return to analises.

  Hi! Find parent means the node is trying to find its way to the gateway - and if this repeats it cant. Its either a range issue or a power issue. You can start by checking the gateway serial log and see if there is any info. Also, have you added a capacitor on the radios? This is very important since the radio is sensitive to power spikes. It this doesnt work start with changing the power source and check your wirings / ground connection on the node. Also you can try to move the node closer to the gateway - if this works and you have some distance between node and gateway you should consider a repeater.

  In the MySensors protocol, messageType is also called command (for historical reasons I guess?). So c made sense, at least when the debug output was added to the code. There is a link available in the description in the debug faq to the code where a comment saying "The command field (message-type) defines the overall properties of a message" is available.

  I finally got things working, I think the main problem turned out to be some bad dupont jumpers, I ended up just swapping out all of them and the gateway started working right away, pretty cool stuff.. Looking forward to adding more sensors and other things, just waiting for more stuff to come in the mail.. I decided to try my Uno for the node instead of the Nano so I'm hoping the Nano works as well as the Uno did for my next sensor... I have attached a couple screen shots of how the serial gateway should respond with and without an operating node.. Thanks!

  @jeylites It should have it's own ID. ID = 0 is reserved for the gateway. There can be only 1 gateway for a specific frequency. If a controller allows several hardware to connect, you can have more then 1 gateway, but tgese should each have their own frequency.

  @Dominic-Bonneau Hi! Most examples on the mysensors build pages use components suitable for 5 V which is not optimal for a battery driven device. The most common PIR component can be modified to use 3.3 V though. There are lots of advice for building battery driven sensors in the forum and one page on the mysensors web dedicated to this. Many DIY openhardware build PCBs that specialize in battery power can be found on the openhardware site linked in the forum. But I suggest you follow @mfalkvidd 's advice and don't go for too much or too hard in your first build. Just get your first simple sensor together, and take it from there.

(By pure chance, I happened to stumble across it minutes after it was first released, but didn't order one as I didn't have an immediate need, and I already have too many processors which I bought hoping to find a good use for already! Nevertheless I'll probably get one someday.) I wasn't commenting on the quality of the hardware, just on the suitability for our purposes; parts which are only available in quantity one every few months IF YOU ARE LUCKY have some limitations. From the article you linked, perhaps that will eventually change. We'll see. how soon. It's so cheap that if they don't keep limiting the quantities, one customer could buy up the full month's supply for embedding in a commercial product. I'm wondering how it would be useful to us in DIY home automation tho. As a node, I'm not seeing it as a major contender. Let's compare it to an Arduino Pro Mini (under $2 shipped). The minimal RPi zero plus memory, shipping and tax is going to be several times that. The RPi Zero as node takes a lot more power to run and will not power up and down so quickly and gracefully, so it's not going to work well with battery power (and will have a larger passive load on mains power). It tends to require a whole OS which often gets in the way of direct interfacing with hardware, and requires system administering. There aren't as many sensor libraries for it. It has a much faster CPU and far more memory, but for most nodes that's just overkill. I'm not seeing that it would be competitive for most nodes even at the same price as an APM. But there must be some special purpose home automation nodes where it would be useful - any ideas? Of course, it would work as server for some Home Automation Controller software. But you only need one of those, and how much money would it save once fitted out (relative to total system price) compared to using a RPi 3 (with built in WiFi and BLE) or RPi B+ @ $25, or BeagleBone Green? So I'm still wondering what niche it would fill, within our domain... What ideas do people have for making good use of a RPi Zero as a MySensors node, if it was easily available at the nominal price? (Understand, I'll probably eventually get one to play around with because it IS cool, but not necessarily for HA. I also have a $9 C.H.I.P. on order, and a $19 PINE A64, and a RedBear Duo, etc. But those are to feed my addiction, I don't see them as changing the DIY Home Automation landscape).

  @Cliff-Karlsson I use active beam detector. Power is needed on both sides though but if that is an issue you can always use mirror on the other side. In my experience these things are very sensitive in short ranges (below 5m). More expensive models let you adjust trigger time too.

  Simply because I am not good at all in "coding" or writing sketches. I would have to hope someone else creates the exact sketch that I need. I saw some video where someone showed of the sensor and some "simple" code. There where alot of arrays involved and you had to write some half complicated "algoritms" to translate the different arrays of temperatures into "persons" to detect.

  @ahmedadelhosni Its still wery new and the implementation is based on dimmer. This way you can get options from 0 to 100 and also its the reason the selector has separate on/off switch. The problem is the mobile app. It just dont have proper implementation yet to show selector as buttons or dropdown.

  As far as the device receiving the sensor's signals, could they be received by something like this Sensor Shield? or is it better to handle the receive of sensor data by the RPi? Or is this more of a preference kind of situation? I was thinking of using the shield for the heating elements/lighting arduino at minimum, but if its better to have the driving arduino receive the information and then send relevant sensor data to the RPi for the database part...right now I've been thinking of the RPi recieving the sensor data and then talking to the heater/light arduino when changes/adjustments need to be made (the RPi will be the master of the l2C connection between them anyway.) @hayduke Well, the temp/humidity will likely be different enough from the room's temp/humidity to matter to the beings inside the vivarium (I actually have run my apartment's thermostat while I was fixing some heating arrangements to keep him whithin a healthy range...wasn't something I want to do long-term.) I may just run a long wire from the sensor to the nano, either using some single pins of cat5e I have lying around (since it would have a plastic sheathe already) or put it in some heat shrinkwrap. I went looking for electronics coating materials and I'm probably going to grab a couple to see which work best. From what I can tell, as long as I ensure the humidity sensor's input location stays 'clean', it should protect all the rest of the circuitry from the water mist. They'll be physically protected pretty well from direct watering but the floating water droplets that get in the little enclosure...I want to limit the chance of their damage. I will definitely be providing lots of pictures of the build I'm always big on credit where credit is due. @epierre As to the lights, I finalized my choice and thus had to make some changes in what I'll be ordering as they're 12vdc; 60W for the daylight circuit and 30W for the moonlight circuit. Thus, FET from what my research turned up and I found a board with 4 channels of IRF540-type power FET. The ones I'm going with are 'full spectrum' 80+ CRI (the 95+CRI ones I was eyeballing weren't flexible with lengths shorter than they advertised which would have run me about 1.5x as much as I'm already shelling out for these lights.) If they don't end up meeting the PAR of the plants, there's room for me to put a light in to supplement them. Just have to make sure they are atleast moderately easy on the eyes- full grow-tier lights would make the vivarium strange and really mess up the snake's senses since reptiles take cues off certain wavelengths as well (which was my driving point of getting a medium/high CRI lighting fixture in the first place.) I've also got a local electrician who will handle a chunk of the mains-wiring and hopefully be able to double check that I have everything properly protected against surges/shorts. I also found a 4 channel phase-control board for the ceramic heaters. Running the numbers to make sure they will work; I'm probably goign to skip the 200W CHE and switch to something like 3 or 4 CHEs of lower wattages so I can do a more even heat. Probably a 150W in a corner with rocks for a basking spot and then two 100W out another 8 and 16 inches out for moderate ambiant heat. Sanity check, 4 of the SI7021's (such as this SI7021 can be wired and controlled by one nano? Or do I need one nano for each sensor?

  Thanks for the explanation of inclusion mode. Much appreciated. I thought some of the gateway sketches did allocate node id's....but that for some reason the MQTT Client gateway didn't. No big deal....I don't want to use a 3rd party controller, so will just hard code the id's for now.

  @Cliff-Karlsson I'm not too sure you will get that reaction time from anything but the Wemo app itself, or the mechanical switch on the Wemo. The problem I found out with the Wemo is, it will randomize what port it connects to in a certain range. I can't remember the exact range (maybe 49152-49156?), but I think it's stated in the .sh script. Therefore, the script or whatever program that is doing the switching needs to first find the proper IP/Port, then actually run the command. The one option you may have is setting a static IP to each Wemo switch, then sending it more direct. To be all honest, this is why I switched from Wemo over to MySensors and the Relay sketch. Works much better than the Wemo's do, and haven't had a chance to buy and test any Zigbee wall switches yet.

  Hello, As mentioned on the MySensors page, NSS, MOSI and SCK are not 5v tolerant so you need to connect them to a level converter. Don't connect MISO to the level converter, it's not necessary and not working for me ! Hope it helps ! David.

  @tbowmo I'm using a Harmony Companion, it's only the hub and a simple remote. Before I used a Harmony One and for me it's no problem not having a display anymore. By default I can setup 3 different activities (can be too limited for some) and I integrated the Harmony Hub in a Vera Edge. The Edge can be triggered on activities which you activate. No it does not yet do what you demand ,but for me the Hub is a great addition to HA.

  @Erik-Forsberg I think one should be a bit careful about making too many special rules for different cases, between device and controller. I think there should be set ways of communicating between the controller and device. There should also be ways for the user to make rules to create the automations, but this should not change the set ways for communication. In this case, when we need an initial value from the user, which should be automated somehow, I think the user should be able to make rules, and somehow be able to set an initial state, by controller API or other means. But I think that should be detached from the specific device - controller communication. We can continue at github.

  @candylion I believe so, old-fashioned style LED vintage bulbs with conventional exposed filament look for decorative lighting. You can utilize "vintage style" bulbs for as long as the light fixture and wattage match. I am acutally using one of my vintage bulbs (which I bought from Codale) in our living like an accent light in the corner of the room.

Sadly I don't think we can close the :80 port. It is (was) used by all the chat software. For the rest: never keep the box-user, never keep the box-software, try to never keep the box-ports.   Now the RPi based on a new install of Raspbian Jessie, OpenHab 1.8.0 and Mosquitto is up and running and the ESP8266 MQTT client does connect without any problems. I have not changed anything in the code but Mosquitto is now based on the RPi repository for Jessie and not the mosquito_wheezy one. That seems to have fixed it so those versions are likely different but I have not put any time into checking this.

  Maybe you can use LDR, one for each LED but make good isolation when you put the LDR close to the LED. With LDRs you will not use same power and "almost" no chance that you get any shortcut between Arduino stuff and washing machine

  Hi @n3ro. You have written the correct command. You dont need the incomingMessage if the sensor doesnt expect that. Yes, atleast the nodes in strategic locations. I have some node in the outskirt of my network which is USB powered and not a repeater... no point how i see it. Dont use delay() or block code in any other way if you are using it as a repeater.

  Hi @Rolo6442u - welcome! st=fail means the radiotraffic between the node and gateway fails in some way. Sometimes it can reach the gw, but some more skilled in the code need to present you with the details. If you use a nrf radio and you dont use a 4.7uF cap on VCC-GND thats a good advice.

  I don't think Arduino has a standard sleep function. Which function do you mean? The MySensors sleep function does several things, including powering down the radio (if a radion is used). It is quite power efficient.

  The greatest thing about mysensors is, that it can be combined with almost any home-automation controller. That was the reason for me to have a closer look at it. I will be able to reuse my whole sensor network when I will exchange my controller in future. Riot would be interesting for me if the hardware is cheap and if there would be a nice housing for the babies, and ofcourse if it would be compatible to mysensors.

  Hi, I'm in the same situation as you, designing future house electric system. Routing all the wires to the main cabinet (fuse box) is overkill since you can not wire a two position switch (in the room) and automation (at the panel) in such a way that they can work together, you either wire them in parallel and then the automation can not turn the light off if the room switch is on, or in series in which case the switch can not turn on the light if the automation failed. The only way to use it would be by using Push-Button like switches (doorbell switches) in parallel with the automation, commanding some type of step relays, but in that case the price is way high for wires and relays. My approach is to take both light leads to a larger light switch box in the room, plus some 12V rails, there I have some 12v-5v dc-dc reg, Arduino, relay board, pushbuttons and confirmation leds, plus radio. The system's top priority it turning lights on/off, I'm also considering adding another Arduino in ther for the radio communication, just to be sure the main Arduino does not crash and leave me in the dark. As relays for lights I use the aliexpress cheap relay boards with Songle 220V 10A rated relays, my CFL and LED lights take 200W max, which is under 1A, so the relays should last a long time. I've chosen the 12V low power buss for the cheap and reliable 12v-5V DC-DC step converters. You may go with 24V if you find the right voltage converters for a good price. For the sensors I leave the cable tubing out of the wall a few inches, and after painting I cut to the surface level and glue (silicone) a small box that sticks out with holes on top and bottom for better airflow. Heck I even have some dead end cable tubes in the walls for some DS18b20 in wall temperature probes, useful on exterior walls to prevent dew knowing the inside temperature and humidity. PS. Add some tube to the radiators if you use such things for heating, might be useful for monitoring in/out temps, and correlated to some electric motor ball valves you can have heating zones in your system.
